1899

January 1, 1899 - Sabbath.  Very snowy.  Quite a white New Year.  Only 18, besides Mr. Fraser up to church.

January 2, 1899 - Monday.  Fine.  Thermometer 18 degrees below zero.  I washed clothes.  Also sewed some.  It is a cold night tonight.  Morrison was at the Cross Roads this forenoon and up to the school house in the afternoon.  The children had a good day getting wood.

January 3, 1899 - Tuesday.  Not very fine.  Mr. English was working at the hen-house.  Morrison took some stuff up for the school-house.  I almost finished Flossie's dress.  Olin Graham and his mother called.  Uncle John came back from South Branch.

January 4, 1899 - Wednesday.  Slightly soft with light snow and rain falling.  D.M. finished the hen house this forenoon.  He went to the Village this afternoon.  Got Roy and Alden a suit of clothes apiece.  He and the boys are up to Prayer Meeting tonight.  I am "all alone" for Flossie and Harry are in bed.  It is nice to be alone sometimes.  Thoughts that are sweet and serious come at such moments, and there is a tender sense of companionship too, to brighten and cheer one.

          Tired out and sadly fretting
For my hasty heart had said
Words that I was still regretting
            Then I op'ed God's word, and read-
Read the word that bids us ponder
Gain the praise of Christ our Lord
Do a work that will not shame us
            His approval will afford.

July 10, 1899 - Monday.  Rather dark this morning, but a fine afternoon.  How long it is since I have written any! I did not feel in the mood for it, but now I must endeavor to do better.  Mr. Blaikie passed away June 15, 1899 at about nine o'clock in the morning.   Mr. Rose has been with us since Mr. B. took seriously ill.  After his death, he still stayed, as it  was so short a time until vacation.  He and D.M. both went away today.  The former to his home in Urbania, Hants County; and D.M. to Amherst as a G.L. Delegate.  They went via Truro.  The afternoon has been lonesome and so dreary. A sadness seems to opress me;  a sadness that "my soul cannot restrain".  But I know that it will pass away and joy will return.  Annie M.
