1892

January 1, 1892 - Friday.  New Years Day.  Cold and windy.  Morrison went to Riversdale in the morning.  Johnnie Willie and Christy Graham came up.   Adam Johnson carrying deal all day.  Almon came at night , or along in the afternoon.   Mr MacKay went down to Ned's.   We had a candy spree at night.  All those at the other shanty were here except D. McLeod, and Lew Fulton, only a little while.   Howard Graham and Muir McCabe were in from Johnson's.  They were pretty high with something stronger than water.   Roy's head got well messed with candy.  The two chaps left around ten o'clock for their own quarters.   Christy here to tea.

January 2, 1892 - Saturday.  Softer than yesterday.    S.J. and Martin Johnson up today.   Adam Johnson went to Riversdale.  Almon here.  Was baking today.  Christy here to dinner.  They all went home tonight from our shanty except Bub, D.M., self, and children;  and from the other, except Mr MacKay and D. McLeod.

January 3, 1892 - Sabbath.  Still soft.  We were up a little earlier than last Sabbath.  Mr MacKay and D. Mcleod here for dinner.   The crowd all came back this afternoon.

January 4, 1892 - Monday.  Rainy.  So bad this afternoon that they stopped work at quarter time.   Adam Johnson here today.  Little Andy came up tonight.  Adam Wright was up too.  Two new men came to the other shanty tonight.    One of them is a piper, and they are all up hearing him play.  We must go too, I guess; but it's raining hard.

January 5, 1892 - Tuesday.  A fine day.  Bad weather for logging.   Morrison went to Truro today, and back on the noon train. He walked to and from Riversdale.  Got me a salt cellar.   They began piling a new deal pile.  The other one got too high to carry deal up.   Mrs Robert MacKay called this afternoon.  She was up visiting Jane.   She is stopping this evening to hear W. Harrington play the bagpipes.

January 6, 1892 - Wednesday.  A fine day, but rainy and snowy tonight.  Put the clothes soaking today and baked biscuit.  Ad Wright was over to Riversdale for us.  He brought the barrel of molasses, factory cotton, overshoes, boots etc.  Morrison got a pair of boots for me yesterday.   Johnnie Willie and Willie were down tonight.  Guess the rest of the other shantymen have forsaken us.  Alden has his new boots on now.  They fit fine.

January 7, 1892 - Thursday.  An awful rainy day.  No work done anywhere in this mill or woods either.    The water was pretty high.I was up to the other shanty for a while.

January 8, 1892 - Friday.  A fine day.  Rather cold tonight.  Was baking this forenoon and part of the afternoon.  Washing too.   Got my clothes out about 3 o'clock.  Andy Graham was up here for dinner.  he brought the mail.   I had a letter form Edith today.  Adam Wright was over to Riversdale, and brought over a barrel of apples for us.  The piper was down tonight playing his pipes.

January 9, 1892 - Saturday.  It rained and snowed both, last night.  But was fine today.   Very disagreeable logging and sawing.  They just sawed half a day. Then they all went home but Fos (of our crowd),  and he went to Riversdale after a .......?.....  .  I wrote to Edith today.  Did not get much of a letter written.    Did not do much work, as there didn't seem too much to do.  It is clear tonight.   Jane and Billie  Harrington were down, but they have gone home now and Foster went up too.

January 10, 1892 - Sabbath.  Pretty fine.  Not very sunshiny.   Quite lonesome.  Fos, Alex Sutherland, Billie Harrington and Morrison went up to the lake in the afternoon.   Jane was down with me.    Cal and Alf,  and Almon,  Johnnie Willie,  Lew, Willie and Johnnie Mackay  came back at night.  Guess the old shanty of Graham's got a washing this afternoon.

January 11, 1892 - Monday.  Fine.  A little drying.  They sawed all day.  Bub got back about three o'clock.  Morrison sawed.   They started to jam the saw and broke the burr.  I was upto the other shanty a few minutes, getting Johnnie Willie's cards for him.  lew Fulton came down with me to get some apples.

January 12, 1892 - Tuesday.  Not very fine, but not stormy.  Mr Mackay and D.M.  went to Riversdale this morning.   Morrison did not start until after Mr MacKay.   James William Deyarmond and Henry Graham  were here to dinner.   They were on their way out to Johnson's.   Johnnie Willie went out too.  He has left Alex's.   Herb Higgins got his foot cut and came home today.    Maggie MacKay came home from Truro today.   Sewed a little this afternoon. January 18, 1892 - Monday.  Pretty fine.  Don't know what the weather is going to do tonight.   They were trying to fix the saw all the forenoon.   But they have to take it to Truro to get fixed.   So they put an old one on.   Bub don't like it much.   I baked most all day today and mixed bread tonight.    Such creatures to eat, as men are!!!!   Jane was down a while, also W.
